About Us
We created “Lexington Remembers WWII” to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII in 2020. In the 1940’s Lexington, a small, 5,000+ strong mostly farming town near Boston, sent more than 1460 of its residents to fight. Men and women joined the ranks; many just out of high school went overseas; some to Europe others to the Pacific Theatre. Fifty-nine did not return.
Our ad hoc committee started preparing for this commemoration in April 2019 and plans to continue until Veterans Day November 11, 2020. It is nearly 40 strong, representing 17 Lexington organizations and a number of folks who are just passionate about remembering what our veterans did to help us stay safe.
One of our first efforts was to erect a fitting monument listing the WWII Fallen. With the support of the Monuments Committee and the Select Board (formerly Board of Selectmen), we are hoping to dedicate a plaque to the WWII Fallen and place it alongside of the WWI plaque at Cary Hall on Veterans Day 2020.
Besides Lexington WWII veterans, we are also trying to identify WWII veterans who moved to Lexington after the war and those Lexingtonians who are children of the war. Many of our citizens suffered during the war. We would like to have their stories. To that end, besides collecting information in digital form, we have started videotaping oral histories. These will provide a historical perspective of the lives of some of our Lexington residents.
You can help us by contacting us with information on the Lexington WWII veterans and any information about Lexington during the war years. For the WWII veterans, we are assembling an album of all those that served, including a photo and a paragraph or two about their service, career, and highlights of their lives.
Please send the information to WWTWOLexington@gmail.com. For questions, call George Gamota 781 640 1415 or email to the above address.
